Cherubim

A big, soft cat with the Ragdoll's build that has been its own breed in TICA since 2025: for mink, sepia and solid cats.

The Cherubim looks just like a Ragdoll: big, soft and with a semi-long coat. The difference is the colour. A Ragdoll always has a pale body with dark points and blue eyes. A Cherubim can also be mink, sepia or solid, and its eyes can be green, gold or copper. For a long time such cats were sold as 'mink Ragdolls'. Since 2025 they have been their own breed in America's TICA. It is known as sweet, friendly and calm.

Photos

Story or true?

  • The Cherubim is a brand-new breed, bred from scratch.

Not really. It comes from the same cats as the Ragdoll and has the same build and head. What is new is that TICA has registered it as its own breed since 2025.

  • Every Cherubim has blue eyes, just like a Ragdoll.

No. A Ragdoll must have blue eyes, a Cherubim need not. Its eyes go with its coat: blue-green, green, gold or copper.

  • Ann Baker's cats had skunk genes, or even alien ones.

A tall tale. Baker liked to tell wild stories about her cats. The plain explanation: a natural change in a gene that was passed on.

History

The Cherubim is a branch of the Ragdoll family. Ann Baker, who started the Ragdoll, also bred cats without dark points. Big registries such as CFA and FIFe only accept Ragdolls with points and blue eyes, so mink, sepia and solid cats could not be shown. In 2025 TICA gave them their own breed within the Ragdoll group. Baker had used the name Cherubim long before.

  1. 1960s

In Riverside, California, Ann Baker starts with the cats that grow into the Ragdoll.

  2. 1971

Baker starts her own cat registry, the IRCA.

  3. 1975

Baker registers the names Ragdoll and Cherubim as trademarks.

  4. 1994

Breeders leave the IRCA. They may not use Baker's names and call their cats RagaMuffins from then on.

  5. 2022

A proposal is made to let mink and sepia Ragdolls compete for titles at shows.

  6. 2025

On 1 May the Cherubim becomes its own breed in TICA, in the Ragdoll group, and may compete at shows.

Looks

A big, sturdy cat with a soft semi-long coat. Build and head are the same as the Ragdoll's; only the colours and the eyes differ.

Head
Medium to large, a broad triangle with soft curves, as in the Ragdoll.
Ears
Usually medium-sized, broad at the base and tilted slightly forward.
Eyes
Large and oval. Not always blue: mink cats often have blue-green eyes, sepia cats gold to green, and solid cats green, gold or copper.
Body
Large, long and solid, with heavy bones: the Ragdoll's build. It grows slowly and can take up to four years to reach full size.
Tail
Long and full, wide at the base, and in proportion to the body.
Coat
Semi-long, soft and silky, usually with little undercoat. Shorter on the face, longer on the ruff and flanks.
At shows
Only TICA recognises the Cherubim as a breed. FIFe, CFA and the GCCF do not. In FIFe and CFA a Ragdoll always has points and blue eyes, so a mink, sepia or solid cat cannot be shown there.

Colours

The codes in brackets

Cat registries write colours as an EMS code. The letter is the colour (n black, a blue, d red, f tortie), s means silver or smoke, y golden, and the numbers tell you about white (01–09), shading (11, 12), the tabby pattern (22–25) or colourpoint (33).

  • Seal mink(n 32)
  • Blue mink(a 32)
  • Seal sepia(n 31)
  • Black(n)
  • Seal point(n 33)
All colours and patterns (16)

Mink and sepia

  • Seal mink (n 32)
  • Blue mink (a 32)
  • Seal sepia (n 31)

Mink sits between pointed and sepia: the body is paler than the points, but the contrast is softer than in a Ragdoll. Sepia is evenly dark. There are no Dutch names for them.

Solid

  • Black (n)
  • Blue (a)
  • Chocolate (b)
  • Lilac (c)
  • Cinnamon (o)
  • Fawn (p)
  • Red (d)
  • Cream (e)

The TICA standard could not be read. These colours come from one French breed description, which also names tortie, smoke and silver.

Tortoiseshell

  • Seal tortie mink (f 32)

Tabby

  • Seal tabby mink (n 21 32)

With white

  • Seal mink mitted (n 04 32)
  • Blue mink bicolour (a 03 32)

Colourpoint

  • Seal point (n 33)

The sources disagree. A magazine says the classic Ragdoll colours are allowed too, but a kitten with points and blue eyes is often registered as a Ragdoll.

White

  • White (w)

A magazine writes that every colour is allowed except pure white. Other sources say nothing about it.

Did you know?

  • 1 May 2025

On that day the Cherubim became a TICA breed that may compete at shows.

  • Not just blue

Ragdolls must have blue eyes; a Cherubim can have blue-green, green, gold or copper eyes.

  • 4 years

A Cherubim grows slowly: it can take up to four years before it is fully grown.

  • Little angels

Cherubim is an old word for angels. Ann Baker chose that name for her cats.

  • Two names

Ann Baker protected only two names for her cats: Ragdoll and Cherubim.

Health

How long10–15years

Nobody has measured it in the Cherubim yet. It comes from the same cats as the Ragdoll, and Ragdolls usually live 10 to 15 years. Take it as a rough guide.

Heart muscle disease (HCM)

The heart muscle thickens, so the heart pumps less well. The Ragdoll has its own inherited form: about 1 in 4 tested Ragdolls carries one copy of the gene. Whether it is as common in the Cherubim has not been studied.

How it is found: The DNA test for the Ragdoll form and a heart scan by a specialist, for both parents.

Gum disease

The problem seen most often in Ragdolls: about 1 in 11 has it in a year. Sore gums make eating painful. There are no figures for the Cherubim yet.

How it is found: No DNA test. Regular dental checks at the vet and good tooth care.

Ask the breeder for

  • An HCM DNA test of both parents
  • A recent heart scan of both parents
  • Which registry the kitten is registered with, and as which breed

Care

  • Grooming

Comb the semi-long coat once or twice a week. With little undercoat it usually does not mat easily.

  • Exercise

A calm cat that still enjoys a game. A few short play sessions a day keep it fit.

  • Food

It keeps growing until about four years old. Ask a vet how much food suits its age and weight, so it does not get too heavy.

  • Allergies

Nothing is known about allergies to this breed. If you are allergic, spend a few hours with a Cherubim first.

  • Pedigree

Only TICA registers it as a Cherubim. Other registries do not have the breed, and there it cannot be shown as a Ragdoll.
